Experimental Capture is an interdisciplinary studio course co-taught with Golan Levin exploring unconventional image-making and digital experimentation. Students develop self-directed research projects using devices and algorithms to capture new representations of people, objects, places, and events, working across a range from no-tech and low-tech methods to emerging technologies. The course covers panoramic, high-speed, multiscopic, and multispectral imaging; depth sensors and 3D scanning; motion capture; and computer vision and machine learning techniques for detection, tracking, and classification. Underlying all of these methods is a shared inquiry into how devices that sense beyond the limits of human perception can produce new ways of seeing, and what the poetic, epistemological, and cultural implications of those representations are.
